Chapter 15
A STUNNED silence comes over the room as what Jaquan said sinks in. Scott gets on his knees beside the bed, and through tears, urges Gabriel to wake up.
Mel sits down on the foot of the bed, feeling a sudden waning in the adrenaline rush the evening has been up to this point.
Natosha finally breaks the silence as she tentatively asks, “If Adrien has taken possession of Gabriel’s body, where is Gabriel?”
“He’s still in there,” Jaquan assures her. “In the same way I was always present while Adrien was in my body, Gabriel is still present in his body.”
“It’s my fault,” Jaivyn says. “I could see what a weakened state Gabriel was in when we got here. I tried to build up his energy with my own, but it was not enough.”
“It is not your fault,” Jaquan assures his brother.
“He should have never taken part,” Jaivyn protests. “He was too weak and compromised. I should have put a stop to it, or at least postponed it until we could build up his defenses.”
“If he was not here, Adrien never would have cooperated,” Jaquan asserts.
“He’s right,” Natosha interjects. “No one is at fault. I warned Gabriel that Adrien could feed off him and deplete his energy. He knew the risks. It doesn’t do him or any of us any good to sit around here talking about what we should have done. We need to figure out what we are going to do next.”
“She’s right,” Scott says, standing up and wiping his face. “Gabriel is like the brother I never had. I am not going to let some spoiled little rich kid from the nineteenth century take him away from me.”
“All right,” Jaquan says, taking charge again. “Obviously another force is at work here, and we need to figure out what it is. We need to come up with a plan.”
“I don’t feel very comfortable having this conversation in front of him,” Natosha admits, motioning toward Gabriel’s form in the bed. “Maybe we should at least go in the other room.”
Scott looks apprehensive at the thought of leaving Gabriel’s side, but Mel chooses this moment to speak up.
“Look, I am an old man, and do not have any of the abilities it is obvious others in this room possess. I do know, however, how to sit watch over someone’s bedside. I’ll stay here with him, while you four figure out what needs to be done.”
“Thank you,” Scott says, “I’ll get you a chair from the dining room.”
Scott retrieves a chair, and they set Mel up beside the bed to watch over Gabriel, with instructions to let them know as soon as he awakens. Natosha, Scott, Jaquan, and Jaivyn then gather in the living room.
“I know this may sound crazy at this point, but I actually feel sorry for Adrien,” Natosha says to begin the discussion.
“What?” Scott exclaims. “How can you feel sorry for him? Ever since Gabriel moved in here, that damned ghost has caused problems, and now he is trying to steal my best friend.
